Pick a water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.
For trips near the equater (Africa), I would look for a minimum SPF 45.
Use a Sunscreen that adaquately blocks both UVA and UVB rays.
If you are at risk for acne, I suggest a Non-Comedogenic
(Oil Free) suncreen (one that does not clog your skin's pores).
Use a UV-protective lip balm, WITHOUT Oxybenzone.

Most sunscreens tested, stained fabrics.
Broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) Sunscreens have Expiration Dates.
Do not use Sunscreens with an expired expiration date, as it will NOT be as effective.
Photostability = the ability to stabilize under sunlight.
Photostabilizer = Slows down the breakdown of the UV blocker.
Water Resistant = SPF level stays effective after 40 minutes in the water.
Very Water Resistant = Very water resistant means it holds after 80 minutes of swimming
Does sunscreen EXPIRE?
Some sunscreens include an expiration date.
MayoClinic says (quality) sunscreen designed to last up to three years.

FDA delays deadline for new US sunscreen labels
"We’re being encouraged to buy sunscreens that offer broad spectrum protection" - WebMD
FDA’s New Sunscreen Rules: FAQ - 6/14/2011 - webmd
"The most important of the new rules:
* The claim “broad spectrum” will appear only on sunscreens tested
for a minimum standard of UVA protection.
* All sunscreens will carry their SPF rating. On products without
the broad-spectrum claim, SPF will rate only UVB protection.
On broad-spectrum sunscreens, higher SPF numbers mean more
protection against UVB as well as more protection against UVA.
* Sunscreens that claim to be water resistant must show how long they
last after a person has been swimming or sweating: 40 minutes or
80 minutes. Sunscreens that are not water resistant will have to
say so in the “fact box” on the side or back of the package.
* As do other over-the-counter drugs, sunscreens will now have a fact
box listing warnings and other important information in an easy-to-find location.

AVOBENZONE (also called: Helioplex and Parsol 1789)
Avobenzone is a very good UVA Blocker, but breaks down quickly in sunlight.
Therefore, reputable companies that use Avobenzone also add a photostabilizer
to slow down the breakdown. A highly touted agent for this purpose is octocrylene.

"zinc and titanium in spray or powder sunscreens are not recommended,

Nano Zinc Oxide is considered by some authorities to be better than Nano Titanium Dioxide because:
1] Nano Zinc Oxide is NOT as white as Titanium Dixide
2] Nano Zinc Oxide does a better job of reflecting UV than does Titanium Dioxide
3] Titanium Dioxide is classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans (do NOT breath it).
(so, perhaps, if we do not breath it, it will not adversly effect us? or will it?)
and
4] I would expect it to be cheaper than the Titanium Dioxide (but I don't know that).

I SURE WISH THAT "THEY" WOULD DO A BETER JOB OF DEFINING, Micro,
very-fine, micro-fine, nano,... particles - seems like there is some
mis-use of these terms, causing confusion, to me.
Studies have shown that micronized zinc exposed to ultraviolet produces free radical damage.
In light of the growing evidence that micronized zinc may be harmful,
and because nanoparticles in sunscreens are not regulated, caution
should be exercised when using ultrafine zinc sunscreens.

BRANDS - Some Suncreen Products of Possible Interest?
WE PASSED ON THESE POPULAR ITEMS (in 9/2010 - check again):
BEAVER 43 Sunblock - We PASSED
Beaver 43 Sunblock was well liked by one TripAdvisor person - She said it worked very well for her:
http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g147409-i432-k5005927-I_found_the_best_sunscreen_and_lip_protection-St_John_U_S_Virgin_Islands.html
When I looked up the active ingredients in it, at EWG.org, www.ewg.org/skindeep/search.php,
most of the active ingredients did NOT look very safe to my un-professional (I am neither a doctor,
nor a chemist) eyes (my opinion, based on research of the ingredients - I could be very wrong).
Some people do not believe in the work done by EWG.org
Ingredients of Beaver 43, as as listed on the manufacturers web site: http://beaversunblock.com/
Octinoxate, Octocrylene, Oxbenzone, Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide.
OCTINOXATE - Rated a SIX on the EWG scale scale is Zero to Ten - EWG considers Ten to be
the most Toxic. http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/search.php?query=OCTINOXATE
OCTOCRYLENE - Deep concerns: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/search.php?query=+OCTOCRYLENE
OXYBENZONE - In the opinions of many "experts", you should NOT have OXYBENZONE in your sunscreen.
goodguide.com/ingredients/184390-oxybenzone
http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ingredient.php?ingred06=704372
Titanium Dioxide - usually decent rating, could be rated 1 to 7, depending on the product.
so it is probably low on the EWG scale.
Zinc Oxide - probably rated between 2 to 4 (based on products on EWG)
BLUE LIZARD at CVS and other locations
Blue Lizard is water-resistant and ONLY comes in SPF 30.
Blue Lizard maintains its extreme water resistance after 240 minutes in whirlpool water.
EWG rates Blue Lizard Beach and Sport Sunscreen products from a '2' to '4'
http://breakingnews.ewg.org/2011sunscreen/about-the-sunscreens/?search=Search+Here...&brand_id=255&pt ype=sunscreen&homesearchsubmit=GO
Which seems good to me (a non-professional) - of course, I'd use the two that were rated a '2':

Solar Sense Clear Zinc Advanced Sun Protection Stick for Face and Lips, SPF 50 - LIP BALM
The Solar Sense Clear Zinc SPF 50 rates a 3 (higher is more dangerous) on a scale of 0 to ten,
Zero being the safest for human use. This is probably a good product (in my non-professional opinion).
However, most of the Solar Sense Clear Zinc products, including Solar Sense Clear Zinc Advanced
Sun Protection for BABY, Green Tea & Aloe, SPF 50 rates a SEVEN on the EWG scale
- Ten being the most dangerous to your your health (according to EWG.org).
Of twenty Solar Sense products EWG evaluated, two were rated a '3', two were rated a '4' and sixteen Solar
Sense (of 20 products) were rated SEVEN - http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/search.php?query=solar+sense

activistcash.com - does NOT like EWG.org
I think that I, personally, do NOT like activistcash.com
The non-profit, activistcash.com states that it thinks organizations like EWG are just
after people's money - they could be correct.
So we have the non-profit organization, activistcash, funded by yet another
non-profit organization, called The Center for Consumer Freedom.
And who anonymously funds this second non-profit, The Center for Consumer Freedom?
According to their own web site, "The Center for Consumer Freedom is funded
by restaurants, food companies and thousands of individual consumers."
I do believe in the right to make your own choice, but only with FULL DISCLOSURE
about ALL possible side-effects - a PERSONAL OPINION (and it is very possible that
activistcash.com agrees with me on this).
But they, activistcash.org, seem to be against organizations that are actually trying
to protect consumers from supposedly bad products, the opinion of website, gifthub.
I don't yet have an opinion about activistcash.com.
I also have read hundreds of articles substantiating the negative effects of lots of
sunscreen ingredients described by EWG.org.
And while they may be absolutely NO connection, PABA was once thought to be
a beneficial sunscreen ingredient.
I probably did not check on all of the ingredients that EWG calls dangerous to our health,
only the ingredients that I found in products I was considering to purchase.
I am not a scientist nor a laboratory researcher. I am a computer and electronic
engineer who loves knowledge, helping people and safaris.
I think I'll continue to read articles from activistcash.com, just to get all views.
Complete SUNGLASSES Information - What they should do
Sunglasses should screen out 75% to 90% of viable light.
Sunglasses should be dark, but light enough that you can see your eyes in a
mirror. Look for a uniform tint, although Double Gradient Tinting (extra
tinting at both the TOP and the BOTTOM, can help reduce glare).
Sunglasses are marked with a filter category from 0-4, where 4 is the
darkest lens. Being dark does NOT ensure good UV ray blockage.
Coatings to block UVA/UVB/UVC rays are COMPLETELY TRANSPARENT
- how dark sunglasses are, does NOT effect how well they block Ultra Violet (UV) rays.
Sunglasses should block 1) ultraviolet A, 2) Ultraviolet B AND 3) BLUE LIGHT (400-500 nm)
Finding one that also blocks Blue Rays will be the most difficult.
Wrap-around sunglasses are recommended (although they do not look as good)
Polarization helps with glare (only).
Mirror Coatings are good.
BLUE LIGHT (HEV = 400 to 500 nm) May help Cause Macular Degeneration
New research suggests the sun's high-energy visible (HEV) radiation - also
called "blue light" - INCREASES your risk of macular degeneration.
HEV rays have longer wavelengths (than UV) - 400-500 nm.
Blue Light and Macular Degeneration

to burn easily are at less risk for macular degeneration than people
who burn easily or are bothered by by sun glare."

How Sunglasses Work
UV light is broken into three different types: UVA, UVB and UVC.
UVA = wavelengths(320-400 nm). Slightly blocked by the Earth's ozone layer.
UVB = wavelengths(280-320 nm). Strongly blocked by the Earth's ozone layer.
UVC = wavelengths (100-280 nm). Very Strongly blocked by the Earth's ozone layer.
UV400
UV400 Blocks all UV rays from 100 to 400 nm (UVA, UVB plus UVC).
