KNOPPIX
KNOPPIX is a bootable Live system on CD or DVD, consisting of a representative
collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support
for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals.
KNOPPIX can be used as a productive Linux system for the desktop, educational CD,
rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product
demos. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk. Due to on-the-fly
decompression, the CD can have up to 2 GB of executable software installed on it
(over 8GB on the DVD "Maxi" edition).
KNOPPIX 7.2.0 is the latest (12/6/2013) released version (created Feb, 2013).

VxWorks - Wind River Systems (embedded linux)
Intel bought Wind River in June 2009.
I think of VxWorks is related to embedded Linux, but that may not be the case.
Originally, VxWorks used the VRTX kernel, but the Kernel was later replaced by
a kernel written by VxWorks.

LOG FILES of Interest
Most error and debugging messages are logged by the syslogd and klogd
daemons. General system logging is done by syslogd. Kernel activity
logging is done by klogd. What gets logged is controlled by information
in /etc/syslog.conf. Not all versions and vendors of Linux or Unix
create the same log files, or store them in the same location. As Security gets
tighter, expect more changes. Unix log files are typically in /var/log.
Most log files reside in the /etc/log directory.
Red Hat includes a desktop Systems Logs window (System Tools -> System Logs)
that you can use to search system log files.
Log files that are usually located in the /var/etc directory:
boot.log - System services start and stop messages
boot.msg - Alternate name for the boot.log file
cron.log - Contains status messages from crond
dmesg - Kernel startup log
maillog - Mail log
messages - if not logged elsewhere, log messages usually go to the messages file
mysqld.log - MySQL Server Log
rpmpkgs - Installed RPM packages
secure - Security log - records login attempts and sessions
spooler - News log - messages from the Usenet News server, if its running
up2date - Messages from actions by the Red Hat Update Agent
utmp - The utmp file allows one to discover information about who is
currently using the system. There may be more users currently
using the system, because not all programs use utmp logging.
xferlog - FTP log
wtmp - The wtmp log file logs all instances of superuser login
XFree86.0.log - includes messages from the XFree86 server.

LogSentry (Red hat) (formerly called LogCheck).
LogSentry checks log files that were produced by the standard Linux syslog
facility, and either filters out or filters in log messages based on type(s)
selected by the Admin. LogSentry is not part of the normal distribution, and
must be downloaded and installed. LogSentry sends a daily email to the root user
on the local host computer, containing the specified, filtered log messages.
Hmm - other documentation states that LogSentry runs hourly.
Anyway LogSentry (there are different versions of this utility),installs
the script logsentry.cron in the /etc/cron.d directory.
/etc/cron.d/logsentry.cron simply invokes /usr/sbin/logcheck.sh script
(at least in LogSentry-1.1.1-i686.rpm). Cisco has acquired Psionic,
the maker of LogSentry, but (earlier) versions are available to the public.
Sentry Tools software has been released to the open source community following
the acquisition of Psionic Technologies by Cisco Systems in 2002.

Linux File Permissions
Linux / Unix File/Folder permissions are fairly easy to understand.
All files (and Folders) have an owner - the User who created the File (or
Folder). All Users belong to some Group, even if it is a default group.
All files and folders in Linux (and Unix) have three types of permissions:
r = Read permission
x = Execute permission
w = Write permission
All files and folders in Linux (and Unix) have three types of users:
1] Owner of the file (or Folder)
2] Group
3] Other users
File (or Folder) access permissions can be obtained by using the ls
command. For example, "ls -alF", provides a list similar to:
------ Owner Permissions (characters 1 through 3)
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | | ------ permissions for Other (those in neither Owner nor Group)
| | | | | | (characters 7 through 9)
| | | | | |
| | | | | |
vvv vvv
drwxrwxrwx Owner Group Filename ...
0123456789
- rwxrx- r - - Owner Group Filename ...
^ ^^^
| | | |
| --------- Group permissions (characters 4 through 6)
|
-- Directory (can be used for Link (l) or a
Regular file (-). NOT a permissions bit.
Note that if the parent Folder denies you permission to do Write, for
example, you can not create files in thatr Folder.
The chmod command is set to set or change permissions.
Be careful with permissions. If Folder A allows all users to have
Write access, but File X, in Folder A denies a user access to write
(update, overwrite) that File, the user can use the "chmod"
command to change the User's file access permissions to include
the ability to write (overwrite/update) that file.
Also note that if the Folder gives you write permission, but the File
blocks your write permission, you can move or rename the file, substituting
a malware or virus file. DO NOT ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN TO YOU
