WARNING - I WOULD NOT, PERSONALLY, EVER WEAR OR EVEN BUY CHEMICALLY TREATED CLOTHING THAT DOES NOT FULLY DISCLOSE WHAT INSECT REPELLENT AND/OR INSECTICIDE IS USED ON THE CLOTHES, AND ANY KNOWN TOXICITY AND POISONING SYMPTOMS - THIS IS MY PERSONAL OPINION TREAT CLOTHES WITH INSECTICIDE (Permethrin) Any USA Money (USD) that you take to spend in Kenya, MUST HAVE BEEN PRINTED IN THE YEAR 2011, OR LATER (to cut down on counterfeit money) - it will NOT be accepted if it was printed earlier than the year 2011 (dates are on the bills). NOTE CHECK FIRST, AS KENYA KEEPS ADVANCING THE DATE. The USD notes should not be older than 5/years. So, now in 2016 should be dated from 2011 forward. DOUBLE-CHECK the acceptable age of US dollar bills before traveling. CLOTHING COLORS TO WEAR AND TO AVOID - Click HERE EARLY SEPTEMBER WAS PERFECT - NO MOSQUITOES, NO TSETSE FLIES, LOTS OF ANIMALS, GOOD TEMPERATURES, NO RAIN (well, 60 minutes on one day out of 28 days ) and great Visability. NOTE that is possible to miss the Great Migration in early September. We used a Combination of RID and PICARIDIN, so even the VERY few mosquitoes left us alone. In Botswana, riding on the backs of elephants through the brush is the ONLY time that we really saw lots of mosquitoes, and every time they drifted towards us, they immediately reversed course away from us. Hand Feeding Vultures at Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilation Center, South Africa a Picture of Joany hand feeding a Vulture At the Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilation Center, Kruger, South Africa - Click HERE. These are vultures that are being rehabilitated. They either had injuries or were orphaned. Here you see them eating raw meat out of our hands. Interestingly, Four of the Five vultures would not come near a person trying to hand feed them raw meat, wearing a combination of RID, NATRAPEL and PYRETHRIN (an insecticide). We make NO claims to the effectiveness of this "technique". Mosquitoes that drifted near us, immediately moved away. We customized all of our African Safaris to Kenya, South Africa, (Kruger), Zimbabwe (including Victoria Falls), Zambia, Botswana and Nambia. Some of our African Safari How-to information is HERE. First, we found a safari(s), in each of the countries in which we wanted to go on safaris, from a company that had good references and costs, and whose itinerary was fairly desirable. We spent DAYS on the research. Then we: 1] Substituted more desirable lodges 2] Extended the overall length of the safari 3] Added more game drives and lodges 4] Added more side trips (visits to villages, wildlife rehabilitation centers, elephant-back game drives, hand feeding vultures, kissing and feeding giraffes, walking with, and petting Lions, petting lots of young cats (Cheetahs, Leopards, Lions,...). For Kenya, we contracted with Charles at KENYA.COM. Kenya.com subcontracts with Nature Expeditions, a rather large Safari company, headquarted in Africa. We had a great trip with them, and I will be placing more information is here, in this Kenya Web Page, regarding our many Kenya Safaris and Safari Lodges. NOTE - if you deal with anyone, ensure that your itinerary is the one that YOU want. We had to insist, to get what we wanted. Of course, since there were five of us, we filled an entire safari vehicle. Note that in Kenya, the safaris are off-road, and the game drives will be a lot harder on your spine than in Kruger National Park (South Africa), where the vehicles must stay on the "paved" roads in the National Parks. For Information about Safari DIGITAL CAMERAS (including recommendations), go HERE. For Information about Safari BINOCULARS, go HERE. You will probably discover that the high-priced sunscreen that you are using is not only DANGEROUS to your health, but not doing a very good job of protection. SUNSCREEN - Complete Ingredients, Products & Recommendations Wanting to protect our eyes from the African (Equatorial) sun, I did some research and discovered What Sunglasses should do for you, and that you need ADDITIONAL Protection beyond, UVA, UVB and UVC. It seems that Blue Light (Sun rays from 400 to 500 nm) probably cause Macular Degeneration, so we also need to protect our eyes from Blue Light rays. IF YOU DO NOT BLOCK BLUE LIGHT RAYS, YOU ARE MORE LIKELY TO GET MACULAR DEGENERATION. Information EFFECTIVE INSECT REPELLENTS / KILLERS is HERE Information about MALARIA and Malaria PREVENTION is HERE Information about VACCINATIONS for KENYA is HERE For information about TRAVEL HEALTH in AFRICA, please go HERE I thought that I had read that you Can not take more than KSH 100,000 OUT of KENYA, but Now I am seeing that there are no limits, but you must declare amounts over $5,000 USD, both coming in or leaving Kenya. Here is a list of the Lodges at which we stayed - PDF Ol Tukai was probably the nicest and most reasonably priced of the Kenyan Lodges, that we went to, although all of the Kenyan Lodges were very nice. We strongly recommend the ARK - if you must, have them change your itinerary from the TREETOP to the ARK. At the ARK, you have an ensuite bathroom, and (optionally) you can arrange to be awakened by a bell in your room, if any of the big five are sighted through the winows of the Ark. Since the animals come to the lodge windows for minerals in the ground, there are always animals there. I hear that the Ark was sold and is closed for remodelling (12/2011). CURRENCY CONVERTERS,...

Kenya uses the Kenyan Shilling (KES) for currency. Any USA Money (USD) that you take to spend in Kenya, MUST HAVE BEEN PRINTED IN THE YEAR 2000, OR LATER (to cut down on counterfeit money). The style of the bills changed in 2001. In fact, it is now suggested that USD not be older than FIVE YEARS. Do not bother with Travelers Checks - not very many places will take them. Kenya Forum: US dollars printing dates _ TripAdvisor Mombasa Forum: travel money - TripAdvisor "Kenyan Shilling (KES; symbol KSh) = 100 cents. Electric Adapters, Plugs, Sockets, Voltages and Frequencies

Electric outlets, Adapters, Step-Down Transformers & Converters

240 VAC, 50 Hz (our [USA] 60 Hz clocks won't work here) NOTE that many of our USA appliances are NOT dual voltage (120 VAC & 240 VAC), so your adapter must both: 1] Convert from 240 VAC to 120 VAC and If you appliance won't run on 240 VAC, you will need either: A] A Voltage Converter or B] A step-down transformerI PREFER THE ADAPTERS FROM ADAPTELEC.COM - Any normal plug in the World will plug Into their adapters, except the very large (and old) British Type M. Any USA motors used will run more slowly (on 50 Hz than on 60 Hz) - for example, your electric razor. If you have a low current (50 or fewer WATTs) appliance, you can probably use a Voltage Converters. If your appliance uses more than 50 watts, you probably need a Step Down Transformers. KENYA (same outlet shapes as ZIMBABWE) - 220 VAC WE FOUND MOSTLY OUTLET TYPE "M" and a few of type "G" during our ten of safaris in Kenya. M = 3 LARGE, ROUND blades in a Triangle The Type M, or South African, electrical plug is essentially a larger version of the Type D and is rated at 15 AMPS at 250 VOLTS. I FOUND TYPE M TO BE THE MOST COMMON PLUG IN SOUTHERN AFRICA, YOU MUST HAVE ADAPTER TYPE "M" FOR ANY SOUTHERN AFRICAN COUNTRY You will ONLY find the type M adapter in some African countries - NO where else in the world, and if it's not a type M, it will NOT work in 99% of South Africa nor in Botswana. You will NEVER find the Type M included in a Universal Adapter kit. (old) British Standard 546 (type M) - now often called the South African plug. We used this adapter. EVERY plug in the world will fit into this adapter G = 3 large FLAT Pins Type G plug is commonly known as the 13-amp plug, and technically known as the BS 1363 (British 13 A/230-240 V 50 Hz earthed and fused) I FOUND TYPE "G" TO BE THE SECOND MOST COMMON PLUG IN SOUTHERN AFRICA. BUT LESS THAN One FIFTEENTH as COMMON AS TYPE "M". Contrary to what some sites say, on safari, I saw only ONE type G outlet. We used this adapter. EVERY plug in the world will fit into this adapter But a Richard, guy that writes a Kenya travel book states that most all places use the Type G. D = NWG-14C - smaller, round legs, in a triangular shape Type D plug and receptacle is the BS 546 (5 Amp/250 V earthed) I ONLY SAW ONE OF THESE TYPE "D" OUTLETS IN A MONTH OF AFRICAN TRAVEL. GREAT MIGRATION (mostly Wildebeestes) in KENYA

NOTE that is possible to miss the Great Migration in early September - some years it works out, some years you are either too late or too early to see the Great Migration. Hmm - some documention stated that early September was good for the Great Migration, but now I mostly see other documentation stating "Moving westwards in the middle to end of July, they spill across the northern boundaries of the park and return to the plains in late October." - kenyaodyssey.com "If you are in the Masai Mara you can expect the wildebeest to make their arrival as early as July, but they generally arrive between August and September". - go2africa I would see when the Great Migration occurred on the Precious Year, as this may be the best guess that you can make. Of course, changes in the weather may influence the timing of the migration. HATS, SAFARI - Click HERE

MALARIA

It is our understanding, that mosquitoes in South Africa can carry a form of malaria that is resistant to the preferred anti-malaria drug for Kenya (although there are alternative drugs). LOCKS, ROOM, TRAVEL, KEYS, PERSONAL SAFES and IN-ROOM SAFES

CRIME - PERSONAL AND FINANCIAL SECURITY - ATM - ROBBERIES

If you have concerns about locking up your valuables while on safari, you may want to ask specific questions of the safari lodge where you are staying. We had NO theft problems and were NOT robbed, BUT we were a party of a minimum of six pople, and did not walk around in unsafe areas (we were usually driven by our Hosts in large 4x4 vans). Most Robberies occur at ATMs - use one inside a Bank, with armed guards. I've read that many petrol (Gas) stations now have ATM machines. While we had no theft problems nor robbery, I was surprised to find out that: 1] Be careful drving or walking in crowds your camera can be easily ripped from your hands. If you are driving with the camera strap on your neck, you could, possibly incur a serious neck injury. 2] There are Safari Lodges that have NO room locks that you can use to lock your room while you are not in your room. Let me first say that no one experienced any crime on our travels, including the people that we met. With some Tented camps, It is possible to lock your tent from the outside, if you have a padlock with a long enough hasp - Of course, then the cleaning staff will not have access. While the staff were we stayed were very honest, I always wonder about the 15 year kid, next door. The Ark (a lovely place) has no door locks - we had no problems. Sweetwaters Tented Camp has no locks, but you can use small padlock on zippers. Several of the better lodges had only one key for a room, so you had to leave it (if you wanted your room serviced). 3] While I did not use it, I had a small, lightweight portable lock that could be used to lock (almost) any room door from the inside. 4] Some Safari lodges have only the ONE key to your room, so if you take your key with you, the cleaning staff can not service your room. 5] MANY lodges use "ancient" key types. I have a skeleton key that I got 40 years ago, and it could be used to open any of these rooms. These are the key types used by your grandparents. 6] Most safari lodges do NOT have in-room safes, although some of these lodges can store your valuables in a safe at the the lobby (most Safari Lodges do not have this services). I have read reports of some less-safe lodges, wherein the crooks seem to have access to the contents of in-room safes (rare, I'm sure, but check the reviews on the lodge). Actually, all it takes is a long, thin screwdriver and a little searching on the Internet. I have a Milockie Hotel Safe Lock (Model #MK1000) that will work on Most in-room Safes. 7] I used both a Money Belt and a Leg Safe. For the leg safe, You want good velcro (not metal hooks) to avoid setting off metal detectors - mine did not trigger any alarms. Have seen a money belt with a non-metallic buckle. I had a third, over the neck "safe", that could be used as a more obvious method of hiding money (give thieves that one). Complete Money Protection While Traveling 8] I also took a 20 Liter Pacsafe TravelSafe 20L Portable Safe (model #PE002BK). If you take one, be certain to bring a LONG, THICK cable that you can use to attach it to some immovable object. NOTE that there may NOT be anything to attach the safe to, in your room. Are there any pipes that you can use? 9] Use TSA approved padlocks on your luggage, especially, your checked luggage (so that the TSA can unlock them for inspection, without having to cut them off). Remember that on any flight, you may be forced to check ALL your luggage, because luggage space is limited, so always have spare TSA locks for your bags that you do NOT expect to check (I always have them locked, as well). I have been using the FOUR wheel TSA combination locks (three is too easy to figure out, and I have seen a multi-wheel lock that uses LETTERS, rather than numbers (yielding more combinations). I prefer the combination locks because there are no keys to lose, but it is easier to get into a combination lock than into most keyed locks. Personally, I think that padlocks that open with cards are silly (my personal opinion). You can buy TSA locks that tell you if the lock has been opened by the TSA, but then, what real good does it do to know your bags have been opened? unless you are worried someone will plant something in your luggage (which seems extremely unlikely). Complete Money Protection While Traveling NEVER Hold expensive cameras, Binoculars or other objects near your car window, when travelling slowly through crowds - it may get stolen, even with a neck strap (which could break your neck). Our local guide was emphatic about closing and locking our car windows while driving through crowds of people. ALWAYS lock your hotel room windows and deck doors. If not 2-legged critters, any monkeys in the area WILL get into your room and completely trash your possessions. I hear that you can never get the smell out of your stuff.

The ARK Lodge - Aberdare National Park - Kenya - RECOMMENDED

Got a THREE STAR RATING HIGHLY RECOMMENDED NOTE - as is the case in many African Lodges, there is NO way to lock your room from the outside (while you are gone). NO theft occurred. Waterhole and salt-lick is lite all night and visible from the lodge windows. optional Room buzzers to call you to see the animals. The Ark is up-to-date and more spacious compared to Treetops. The ARK has 60 rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms with showers. There is a ground level hide where you'll literally come face to face with animals. Supposed to be the place for Comfort over romance. Has room rugs. 24 reviews of the Ark Some of the scenes right outside the lounge at the ARK, Kenya: Picture of Some of the scenes right outside the lounge at the ARK, Kenya Outspan - country hotel located just outside Nyeri town - Aberdare National Park - Kenya

The TREETOPS Hotel - Aberdare National Park - Kenya

Got THREE and ONE-HALF STARS Water hole was drying up in December, 2009 - few animals. Supposed to be the place for romance over comfort. Based on reading reviews, it appears that the TREETOPS Hotel, Kenya is aging, used to be be better and has shared bathrooms and shared showers. BUT it got a higher a rating than the ARK LODGE, Aberdare National Park, Kenya. 38 reviews of the TREETOPS Hotel

PHOTOGRAPHY on SAFARI

BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN DRIVING THROUGH CROWDS - YOUR CAMERA MAY BE RIPPED FROM YOUR HANDS.If you are driving with the camera strap on your neck, you could, possibly incur a serious neck injury. If you can not afford a good camera (DSLR) to take on your safari, consider RENTING a camera. If you rent a camera, ensure that you have Insurance to cover the loss or damage to the camera. Here in the USA, a lot of home owner's insurance policies will pay for your personal camera, if lost or stolen - CHECK to see if they will either cover the rental camera or if you can add an insurance rider to you policy to cover the cost of the rental camera. A regular on TripAdvisor, Kenya Forums, Steveb108 had very good luck renting a Canon 70-300 mm IS zoom lens from: "http://www.lensprotogo.com. They did an excellent job of packaging it well and getting it to me with return postage as well". ( http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g294206-i9216-k4484150-Camera_Lenses-Kenya.html#33310674 ) I suspect that you could also buy insurance from the place that rents the camera to you. See also: GPS for your Nikon camera Other GPS information for use on Safaris If you are getting a new Digital camera for the trip, I (and some safari Pros) highly recommend the Canon EOS Rebel T2i (called the 550D in Europe) with the Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS telephoto Lens - it was fantastic and only this one $700 (now $600) lens is (almost all that is) ever needed (11x stabilized, optical zoom). Note that this lens is effectively a 320 mm zoom (for Canon, multiply by 1.6, so we have 200 x 1.6 = 320 mm = an effective 28.8 to 320 mm). So I never had to change lens nor grab another camera (to get a different lens).

African pictures w/ Canon T2i & EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS

I have about 134 pictures that I took, with the Canon EOS REBEL T2i DSLR and the Highly acclaimed Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS telephoto Lens, while spending 30 days in 6 African countries (Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The Canon EF-S 18-200mm (effective 28.8 to 320 mm [11x]) f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens has been highly praised by ALL professional photographers that have reviewed it. These are un-retouched pictures. Some pictures are from our other cameras. Newer versions are the Canon EOS Rebel T5i, T4i and T3i. If you don't want to pay for a DSLR, You might consider the Canon SX50 50x Zoom - it has superb zoom and stabilization capabiLities. African Safaris - Volume One - the most interesting African Safari Pictures - Volume TWO African Safari Pictures Volume THREE African Safari Pictures Volume FOUR You do NOT have to be a member of Face Book, nor do you have to sign in, to view these pictures. This pictures are all available at: http://www.facebook.com/people/David-Woodsmall/1149118859 With Canon's multiplier of 1.6, the 18-200 mm lens becomes an effective 28.8mm-320mm. Some serious amateurs believe that the effective 320mm may not be enough (for distant animals or birds). There was only once that I wanted more zoom, but you certainly don't want to miss a good picture, so perhaps more is better, if the lens quality is as good as the Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens. Oh FOO! the T2i was superceded with the T3i - never fails to happen. Essentially, the Canon EOS Rebel T3i DSLR is identical to the T2i. I have read that there are really only three differences between the new Canon EOS Rebel T3i and the T2i: 1] An articulated LCD display is now used in the T3i 2] A wireless remote trigger capability (instead of Infared) 3] An change in how digital noise is handled for fast ISO speeds. The 2i has a better noise control at at an ISO of 800 The T3i has better noise control at an ISO of 1600 The cameras are pretty much even at all other ISO settings. The Canon T3i is now rated the best entry level Prosumer DLSR (by many Pros). The Canon EOS T2i also won the 2010 Light-weight DSLR Safari Camera and Lens Award. Besides shooting full HD, it can shoot either 6x9 or 3x4 inch formats. It (the Canon T2i and Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS telephoto Lens) will set you back about $ 1,800 USD (August 2010), plus any Chips and extra batteries. Extremely good battery life (your milage may vary). Very bright 3 inch LCD display, although I usually did not use it. I used Class 6 Flash Cards for this camera, so that it could handle HD video (1080P at 30 frames per second). The lens has both Automatic Focus and Image Stabilization, with very good reviews. For a good quality Video / Still camera with 20x optical, I chose the Canon HF-R100 - about $500, less Chips and spare batteries / battery chargers. 1080/60i @ 24 Mbps. (all video interpolated up from 1,664 x 936). This camera did an excellent job, and has a low light capability for video (not tried). It has optical image stabilization. It comes in three models, depending on built-in storage. I thought that built-in storage was silly, harder to backup, what if it fails? How fast is the internal storage? All three models allow the use of Flash cards. I used Class 3 Flash Cards for this camera. The camera has image stabilization. If I had it to do over again, I would have spent the money for a 40x Optical zoom video camera (I had though, who would need more than 20x and how stable could the picture be?). Canon did have such a camera when I bought the 20x. For the most part, I found my 11x optical zoon to be very sufficient. Neeeding a backup camera in London, I bought a Nikon Coolpix L22 (3.7x optical) - it did a very good job for a pocket camera. There are better ones out there now. Paid about $120 USD in London. Excellent battery life on standard 'AA' alkaline cells. "In general a good focal length to take on safari would be 300mm. Bear in mind that compact digital cameras with 20x magnification would only offer optical magnification of the subject up until about 10x (if that), and from there on in the image is zoomed in on digitally (which causes terrible pixilation). (New Digicam models can do 25x OPTICALLY and GREATER - DRW). I have two cameras - a Canon Digital SLR with a 300mm lens, and a Panasonic Lumix. The new Lumix cameras offer an incredible optical zoom of 12x: Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ10. While this is not 12x what you see as the human eye is approximately the equivalent of a 50mm lens with peripheral vision, it would still be 12 x the minimum focal length of the camera which is 25mm. This equates to a 250mm which should be adequate. The big bonus is that the camera is very compact, allows you to take video and is packed with features. To give you an idea of the photos possible, our entire Okavango Product Test in April was shot on our Lumix (which is older and only has a 10x optical zoom): Safari Clothing Product Test, Botswana If you require any further advice please do let me know." You do NOT have to be a member of Face Book, nor do you have to sign in, to view these pictures. All but one of these pictures was taken with a Canon EOS Rebel T2i (called the 550D in Europe) with the Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS telephoto Lens - it was fantastic and only this one $700 (now $600) lens is (almost all that is) ever needed (11x stabilized, optical zoom). Note that this lens is effectively a 320 mm zoom (for Canon, multiply by 1.6, so we have 200 x 1.6 = 320 mm). Most of the pictures are of the Wildlife. PLEASE HELP STOP RHINO POACHING - THEY WILL SOON BE GONE

Stop Rhino Poaching (and Elephant Poaching) Do you know that since the rhino crisis began to escalate 5 years ago in South Africa, John Hume - a private rhino conservator with 21 years of wildlife management experience - has managed to save 911 rhinos and had 250 rhino births on the sanctuary? He has tragically lost nine rhinos to poachers. John Hume is self-funded and his income was derived from private business ventures in timeshare resorts. Currently, he does not earn an income from his rhino sanctuary. Meanwhile, hundreds of global rhino NGO's have failed to save over 2000 rhinos which South Africa has lost to poaching within this time period. These NGO's and various individuals constantly criticize private rhino conservators for advocating a legal trade in rhino horn, even though this will mean that rhinos will not have to die to provide the horn. Who is on the right track? Who should we be listening to on how to save the rhino? STOP RHINO POACHING - John Hume, Private Conservationist RHINO HORN HARVESTING The African elephant is expected to be extinct in the wild in the year 2023.

The cost also depends on the cost of your trip (as the insurance may have to reimburse you for the cost), so be accurate when giving your cost and the trip length (you will probably have to provide proof of the length of the trip - as I remember, I had to send copies of flight tickets [I believe]). Note that for a lot of my safaris and more adventurous excursions, I had to present proof of my insurance before they would take us (at other places, they did not ask).
