AWD vs 4x4 - Cars, SUVs, Trucks
In mine and other people's opinions (there are
dissenters), All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) with Traction-Control does a better
job of providing on-road safety in slippery conditions.
This is primarily because the traction-Control (really brakes),
controls each of the four wheels individually, giving better
control than 4x4 (without traction-control). The only true 4x4
that I've heard about with Traction-control is the AM Hummer (at
least the original Hum-Vee - I don't know about the h3 nor the H3).
I admit that I have not really looked for 4x4's with traction control,
AWD is not normally suited for real off-road driving.
All things equal, AWDs get better milage than real 4x4s.

BG 44K Fuel Injector Cleaner
In my personal opinion, BG 44K Fuel Injector Cleaner is
the best fuel injector cleaner that can be purchased.
Many new car dealers use BG 44K to clean your fuel
injectors. Some new card dealer parts departments will
sell the product to the average citizen.
If you buy BG 44K, GET THE CAN that you pour into the
gas tank - do NOT get the complete kit. Some dealers
will only sell you the kit, which costs too much and
does the typical person no good, as the product can
not be dumped into the gas tank. The "K" (BG 44K)
might be the kit, rather than the can that pours into
your gas tank. I'll check.

CRUISE CONTROL
Do NOT use Cruise Control in wet or icy weather.
If your tires slip, cruise control may cause you to loose control
of your car.
DIESEL FUELS - normal, biodegradable, green & ULSD
B2: - 2% Biodiesel
B5: - 5% Biodiesel
B20: - 20% Biodiesel
B100: - 100% Biodiesel
SVO = Straight vegetable oils.
ULSD - Ultra-low sulfur diesel - available in 2006.
WVO = waste vegetable oils.
Most vehicle manufacturers do not recommend using blends greater
than 5% FOR NEWER VEHICLES - using higher blends will void some
engine warranties.
Note: You should never fuel your vehicle with clean or used
grease or vegetable oil that has not been converted to
biodiesel. It will damage your engine.

SEE BETTER IN FOG
While I do not believe that amber glasses
help you see further in foggy weather, I do believe that amber colored glasses
increase the contrast of what you view, allowing you to more quickly see and
identify objects. WWII pilots used amber lenses in their flying gogles in
foggy weather.
Polarized lenses should also help.
FOGGY WINDSHIELDS
I use Rain-X Anti-Fog to combat fog on glass

HOW Halogen works
Silvania SILVER STAR ULTRA is now the SECOND BRIGHTEST Sylvania HALOGEN BULB AVAILABLE
BRIGHTNESS - BRIGHEST ON TOP - also widest beam on TOP
Silver STAR Ultra = The Brightest - Widest beam = RUN TOO HOT - DIES IN 9 MONTHS
LASTS 9 MONTHS IN MY 2003 CRV
I've gone through EIGHT of them
Silver Star = next brightest - more narrow beam = RUN TOO HOT - DIES IN 9 MONTHS
LASTS 11 MONTHS IN MY 2003 CRV
I've gone through TWO of them
Xtravision = next brightest - more narrow beam <== I NOW USE ONLY THIS ONE
It is My PERSONAL OPINION, is that these bulbs (Silver Star ULTRA) burn TOO HOT.
THE LOCAL AUTOZONE MANAGER COMPLETELY AGREES - USE XTRAVISION, NOT SILVERSTAR nor
SILVER STAR ULTRA Halogen headlights. Perhaps some newer cars can handle them.
I love the light they put out, but I have now replaced
SIX of these SILVER STAR ULTRA BULBS - they are lasting
LESS THAN NINE (9) MONTHS per bulb, in my 2003 Honda CR-V.
You may not have my problem - these do a great job of lighting the road.
Local AutoZone Manger said his customers getting about 11 - 12 months with
Silver Stars - his observation and personal opinion. They may work for you.
Headlight product comparison - Sylvania Bulb type 9003
PLASTIC HEADLIGHT LENS CLEANING
Don't put up with cloudy/glazed plastic car headlight lens -
they can be cleaned. While they might not look or work like
they are new, they make an amazing difference to how much
light your headlights can put on the road.
Without proper care, plastic headlight lens degrade (mostly
due to UV light) and become glazed/murky, evetually turning
opaque - just look at cars in a parking lot. Cloudy Lens can
cause a severe loss of ability to put light on the road,
in as little as three years in Southern states.
I got tired of the poor night visability in my wife's 1996
Pontiac Sunfire, so I went to Advance Auto parts and purchased one
of the many brands of plastic headlight lens cleaner/rubbing compund.
These are specifically formulated for cleaning the glazed plastic
headlight lens used on many cars, such as some Chrysler Neons,
Fords and General motors cars. I used Meguiars PlasticX on mine.
You can get the polish, and a rotary "buffer" for your drill to power
out the glaze, for about $20 from Walmart.
Here are some popular brands:
I suggest that you ask your auto parts dealer for a recommendation.

RADIATOR / LEAK PROBLEMS - AUTOMOBILE
BAR's RADIATOR STOP LEAK
Aluminum powder (looks like) radiator leak sealer.
I recommend that you do NOT flush your radiator, but slowly run
water through the cooling system. The reason I say this, is
EVERY time I had the radiator flushed, I had to have it reparied.
I think that the reason for this is that if the radiator is so
rusted that you have leaks, flushing seems to dislodge more
particles, which then clog the radiator. In my experience, if
you need to use a radiator stop-leak product, you may soon
have to repair the radiator anyway.
REMOTE DOOR LOCK/UNLOCK DEVICES
If you have an aftermarket car door remote control whose remote
no longer functions correctly, you may be able to order a replacemnt
part. I ordered a replacement part for my wife's after market Ratler

WHEN TO LOCK OUT OVERDRIVE
Note: locking out overdrive (the use of your highest gear)
will cause the engine to rotate slightly faster, causing a
slight increase in engine wear. You generally don't want
to lock out overdrive (other than short periods of time),
if that causes your vehicle to exceed, let's say, 4,000 RPM
(adds more wear to your engine). This 4,000 RPM is an
arbitrarly number that I just came up with. You might want
a different value. I accept no liability.
That said, I lock out overdrive under any of these conditions:
1] Climbing a long steep hill. With overdrive engaged, the gear
is too high to give me good speed. The only way I can achieve
the speed that I want is to [1] either push the accelerator to
the floor, going into passing gear (this then burns too much gas,
and causes me to go to fast, having to hit the brakes), or
[2] locking out the top gear (locking out overdrive).
2] Others may not agree, but I use it in high traffic conditions
in either rain, snow or ice, to allow me to accelerate more
quickly in emergencies and to allow the engine to instantly
start slowing the car when I need to stop in a hurry (when I
take my foot off of the gas pedal).
3] Heavy freeway traffic, 25-50 MPH. This allows faster acceleration
and deceleration if needed (as soon as I take my foot off the
accelerator, and start to put it on the brake, the compression
of the engine has already started to (mildly) slow my car down.
STUCK GAS PEDAL?
While a stuck gas pedal can be disconcerting, there is NO reason
to allow a stuck gas pedal to cause you to crash into something.
ANY OF THESE ACTIONS MENTIONED BELOW, MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO YOUR
CAR, OR MAY CAUSE THE CAR TO BECOME EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO STEER,
OR TO STOP - MACHINERY RUNNING FASTER THAN DESIGNED, MAY EXPLODE.
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK - I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY CONSEQUENCES.
I am not a mechanic, not a physicist, nor do I have any training
in these fields.
1] In an emergency ONLY, and remembering that you probably have
both power brakes and power steering, you can SHUT OFF THE MOTOR
(don't forget that you probably have to bypass (manipulate)
the safety switch that is supposed tro prevent your child from
accidentally turning off your car while you are driving.
Leave the car in gear, so that the motor helps slow you down.
YOU DO THIS ENTIRELY AT YOUR OWN RISK - IT IS DANGEROUS
YOU WILL THEN PROBABLY HAVE A TERRIBLE TIME STEERING THE CAR (no power assist).
YOU WILL THEN PROBABLY HAVE A TERRIBLE TIME STOPPING THE CAR (no power assist).
FAILED BRAKES
ANY OF THESE ACTIONS MENTIONED BELOW, MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO YOUR
CAR, OR MAY CAUSE THE CAR TO BECOME EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO STEER,
OR TO STOP - EQUIPMENT THAT RUNS TOO FAST MAY EXPLODE.
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK - I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY CONSEQUENCES.
I am not a mechanic, not a physicist, nor do I have any training
in these fields.
2] If your brakes fail, TRY THE EMERGENCY BRAKE, it may work
even when the brake pedal does not. NOTE that the Emergency
brake usually only tries to stop two tires, usually the
rear tires, so your car may handle differently than you expect
- be expecting unusal braking behavior.
3] Downshifting (Your transmission may allow you to put,
the car in Second, of even First gear - WHICH
MAY DAMAGE YOUR MOTOR AND/OR TRANSMISSION, (do so at your own
risk) may slow the car down.
4] You can attempt to put the car into Reverse, or even
better, into Park - THIS WILL CAUSE EXTREME DAMAGE TO
YOUR CAR, but it might be better than driving off of a cliff.
5] A final thought FOR A STUCK GAS PEDAL (NOT for brake failure)
is to take your car OUT OF GEAR (put it in neutral or depress
the clutch) - THIS MAY EASILY BLOW YOUR ENGINE UP, which might
be preferable to hitting a bridge at a hundered miles per hour
- THIS IS YOUR DECISION. I ACCEPT NO RESPONSIBILITY.
CHECK WITH OTHER SOURCES FOR OTHER SUGGESTIONS.

Until last year (2010), this info was on the INSIDE edge of the tire (you
have to crawl under the car, or take the tire off, to see this information).
Goodyear ASSURANCE TripleTred - Highest Rated Ice, Snow, Wet & Dry (all-weather) Tire - 2004/2011
NOTE: TripleTreds are NO substitute for real Winter tires nor
tires with chains, but if you live in an area that occasionally
sees snow and ice (as I'm going to get tonight) - TripleTreds
give me a lot more grip (I've converted 4 vehicles to them),
and they are fantastic in rain (mine and other people's opinions).
But, If you drive in real snow storms, you need real Winter
tires and chains. I do chuckle at the time I drove right
up a steep, icy road (the back way into my residence), passing
a Lexus, just spinning it's wheels. See my note in the link above,
about REAL TripleTred tire treads - Goodyear makes a very similary
named tire that in no way has the same Goodyear Assurance
TripleTred tread. Of course AWD/4x4 is preferrred for snow/ice.
Also, NEVER use Cruise control in RAIN, SNOW nor ICE, as the tires
may spin very fast, then find a grip, and rocket you at excessive speeds.

DEER, Hitting with Your Vehicle
According to WRAL (?), if you realize that you will hit
a deer wiht your vehicle (happens 1.6 million times a year in the US):
[1] Brake as hard as you reasonably can
[2] Just before your vehicle will hit the deer, LET UP ON THE BRAKES!
It is hoped that the deer will then go under your vehicle, rather
than over the hood and through you and your windshield.

My friend Daine recomends: "iHerb"
You can save lots of money by shopping here! And, no, I'm not getting
a cent to recommend them!
Sample: I pay $50 to buy something in the store (Wild Oats); at iherb
it's about $32 - now that's some savings! Plus my order arrives in two
days with regular shipping - true for Southern California orders, because
iherb is located in Southern California.
Give it a try. I rarely recommend things, but this website is something
else. The man in charge of herbs and vitamins at Wild Oats told me about
it. I've been using it since February 2006 and am totally satisfied."

EGG SHELLS - Why does the shell stick to a Boiled Egg?
COOK YOUR EGGS FOR 30 MINUTES, NOT 15 - The shells won't stick..
Add a pinch of salt - if the egg cracks, this prevents it from flowing all over the place.

Incandescent Light Bulbs - Wikipedia
Compact fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFLs)
Compact Fluorescent Bulbs are similar to fluorescent bulbs, but come
in smaller sizes so that they can (often) be used to replace standard
light bulbs. The ballast for a CFL is built into the bulb (as opposed
to non compact fluorescent bulbs). Typically, a CFL creates the same
amount of light as an incandescent bulb, using about one-fourth as much
energy. Most CFLs these days are using electronic ballasts, rather
than magentic. CFLs will dim slightly with age.
Neon lights up in the visible spectrum when ionized.
Fluorescent lights ionize mercury vapor which gives off ultraviolet
light (outside the visible spectrum) this in turn energizes phosphor
which coats the inside the tube and causes it to fluoresce thus the
name fluorescent Light. Click here for more information about Fluoescent Bulbs
H.I.D. (High Intensity Discharge) is an Arc Lamp. It's called
an Arc Lamp because it shoots an electrical arc between two electrodes
and the light given off is created by that electrical arc.
OPINIONS STATED ARE MY OPINIONS. I AM NOT AN ELECTRICIAN, NOR AN
ELECTRICAL ENGINEER. I try to provide what seem to be facts. Please
alert me to any errors.
Fluorescent Bulbs contain a small amount of dangerous Mercury.
Please check with your city on how to dispose of old CFL bulbs.
You can also check: Where/How to recycle your old CFLs (fluorescent Bulbs).
What to do with broken CFLs - SNOPES
I just noticed (10/1/2008) that Home Depot now recycles compact CFLs (but not
tube-type fluorescent lights). Presumably, Lowes might also be recycling CFLs?
CFLs have a projected life of between 8,000 and 10,000 hours. A CFL
will typically pay for itself in about 500 hours.
Most CFLs, these days. use electronic ballasts, rather than the older magnetic
ballasts. Magnetic ballasts have a hard time starting at temperatures
below 20 degrees farenheit. Electronic ballasts can usually start
at temperatures around a negative 20 degrees Fahrenheit - CHECK THE
PACKAGE LABEL for any details. However, magentic ballasts will work
with more photocell detectors, motion detectors, etc., so be careful
when using CFLs with these types of "switches" (the bulbs will burn
out much faster).
A Relative says CFLs are too blue - she is buying the wrong ones,
and probably a long time ago. Mine are the same apparent color as
incandescent bulbs, and can now be bought in the following hues:
1] SOFT WHITE (my favorite)
2] BRIGHT WHITE and
3] DAYLIGHT.
For more information about Bulb colors, warmth & Brightness, click HERE
I get most of my CFLS at Home Depot (their latest brand is N:Vision)
and some unusal candelabra base types at Lowes. Every time I buy a
new CFL, I see that they have, again, gotten physically smaller, so
that they will fit into more locations. They also keep getting faster,
so that you don't see any delay between when you turn it on, and when
you see its light. You can also get "covered" CFLs - they look more
like a standard incandescent bulb.
We use covered CFLS in most of our lamps (you can even clip a lampshade
to them), and in places that uses the long skinny "pole lamp" bulbs.
Some CFLs are supposed to be dimmable - I have not tried dimmable CFLs.
We even use CFLs in our ceiling fan lights. I also have outdoor CFL
Floodlights - they put out the same amount of light as 90 to 150 watt
incandescent flood lights, and consume UNDER 15 watts.
Here are some of the CFL types that we use. You may not like them.
Prices and stores given ONLY to give you some idea of the cost,
and could be incorrect. READ THE PACKAGE - Some wattages listed
indicate comparable incandescent light output (i.e., "60 watts"),
while others list the actual number of watts consumed by the CFL.
If in doubt about the amount of light produced by the CFL, check
the number of Lumens (amount of light) produced.
FLUORESCENT LIGHT BULBS COLOR/BRIGHTNESS
The higher the color rendering index (CRI) of the bulb, the more
true the colors will appear. I've also seen CRI stated as:
cri/irc: 60 (for a CRI of 60.
A "cool" white bulb commonly has a color temperature of 4,100K.
This is in the low range of blue color, similar to ice.
A "warm" fluorescent bulb often has a color temperature of 3,000K.
It imparts a more orange / red light on objects.
If you decorate with reds, browns, and oranges, you want to illuminate
these rooms with bulbs that have a color temperature in the
2,750 - 3,000K range.
if you happen to like green carpets, or blue colors, light these rooms
with bulbs that produce color temperatures of 4,000K or above.
They use a color rendering index (CRI). It is simply a scale of 0 to 100.
The closer a bulb is to 100, the better job it does at rendering
true colors.
If you want 'neutral' looking CFLs you have to find some 4100k. The only
decent looking CFLs above 4100k are enhanced CRI bulbs that are a specialty item.
- GE sunshine 5000K CFL
5000k / high CRI is pretty nice to work under, but you aren't going to find them for cheap.

("regular") light bulbs.
HERE are some of the more special types of CFL that we use:
Feit Electric 2-Pack 7 Watt CFL Chandelier Bulb (Candelabra base w/standard adapter) - $9.98/for Two - LOWES
"75 watt" CFL Flood Light (uses 23 watts) - $ 8.48 - Lowes
Yellow, covered, CFL (Bug light) - uses 14 watts - $ 7.98 - Lowes
25 Watt Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb - for 3-way lamps - Lowes
Bright Effects #276505 60 watt Candelabra Base - smaller than a normal 15 watt
bulb. We are using these in a ceiling fan as 40 watts was not enough - Lowes.
Some (all?) magnetic ballasts should be able to run on digital
timers, so they say - CHECK THE PACKAGE. I, PERSONALLY,WOULD NOT RUN ANY
FLUORESCENT BULB ON A DIGITAL TIMER that does not use a physically
solid electrical contact to supply voltage to the bulb -
Click here for information about Timers safe for CFLs.
Most Timers, Dimmers and Photocells allow a small amount of electricity
to flow through the bulb (anything plugged into them) at all times -
this causes the CFL to attempt to start without having a sufficent
starting voltage, causing damage to the CFL. Most CFLs can NOT be
safely used with timers, dimmers, photocells or completely enclosed
housings.
My electrician confirmed my suspician that lighted
wall switches also leak voltage and could possibly shorten the life
of fluorescent bulbs. We detected a current/voltage leak on my three-
way lighted wals switches, and replaced them.
Timers that DO work with CFLs
Dimmable CFLs - wikipedia
Many new CFLs are rated to start at zero degrees Farenheit (older ones
at 32 degrees F.). If they do start at these low temperatures, they
probably will not output their full, normal amount of light.
You should not use a CFL outside unless it states that it can be
used in outside situations. Most CFLs rated for outdoor use have
an additional glass/plastic cover over the bulb, to protect it
from the environment. I have used regular CFLs in porch lamps
the have glass covers to keep rain from striking the bulb.
CFLs are usually easier on the eyes, when reading, than incandescent
(normal) bulbs.
CFLs do tend to get gradually darker as they age, so they will put
produce less light as they age.
While CFLs continue to get smaller in size, they can still be larger
than an incandescent bulb, so check to see that the desired CFL will
fit in the your bulb housing, especially if the housing has a cover.

Can I use a compact fluorescent light bulb with a dimmer switch?
Can I use a compact fluorescent light bulb in an enclosed light fixture?
Can I use a compact fluorescent light bulb with an electronic timer or photocell (AKA electric eye)?

ESLs - Electron Stimulated Luminescence
ESL bulbs are the wave of the near (mid 2010 ?) future.
ESLs produce about the same light for the same wattage as CFLs.
I believe that ESL use less heat than CFLs for the same wattage.
ESLs do NOT contain mercury.
ESLs are fully DIMMABLE.
Instant ON.
ESL bulbs produce 40 lumens per watt, compared to 7-24 for incandescent,
12-36 for halogen, 44-80 for CFL, and 30-60 for LED.

ESLs by VU
HALOGEN BULBS
I have very little use for Halogen Bulbs as replacements for incandescent
light bulbs. I use CFL bulbs instead (except, perhaps when I need a dimmable
bulb). Many fires have been started by high-wattage halogen bulbs.
Halogen bulbs produce a brighter, hotter light than do incandescent
bulbs. Halogen bulbs are about 20% more energy efficient than are
incandescent bulbs. see also: HEADLIGHTS
I have fluorescent tube lights (30 watts) under some of my cabinets.
I have noticed that items placed on the bottom shelf of these
cabinets get very warm (in my opinion) - too warm for me to want
to ever use these fluorescent lights when I am not in the house,
for fear of a possible fire (my opinion). Halogen bulbs are even
hotter. I, personally, would NEVER use a Halogen bulb under a cabinet.
Since fluorescent bulbs consume about 25% of the energy of an incandescent
bulb for the same amount of light, and halogen bulbs consume about 80%
of the energy of an incandescent bulb, why would I want to use a more
expensive-to-use halogen bulb rather than a CFL?
Halogen life spans seem to be 2000 to 2500 hours and they cost about
Four ($4) dollars for a 75 watt halogen bulb.
Incandescent bulbs typically have a lifespan of between 750 and 1250
hours, and cost about Fifty Cents for a 75 watt incandescent bulb.
CFLs have a projected life of between 8,000 and 10,000 hours. A CFL
will typically pay for itself in about 500 hours.
CFLs can NOT be successfully used with most electronic timers or
photosensors, as these devices leak small amounts of current, causing
the CFL to continually try to start when the voltage is too low -
this quickly burns out the bulb. Timers that DO work with CFLs.
You should be able to use Halogen bulbs with electronic timers,
photo-sensors and motion detectors - just remember that these
bulbs are hotter than incandescent bulbs.
LED - Light Emitting Diode
Most DIMMERS can KILL most LED bulbs.
CHECK THE AMOUNT OF LIGHT OUTPUT FROM AN LED, BEFORE YOU BUY IT.
There are still a lot of TOO CHEAP LEDs being sold.
Typical LUMENS per regular incandescent bulbs>
I am now (2015) using CREE LEDs exclusively (if they have the size/lumans.
They are made her ein North Carlina, and have been rate the best by
several big name companies, The are sold by HOME DEPOT.
I was in Lowes the other day (4/2/2010) - they have about 25 new types
of LED Bulbs (not as bright as their CFL nor Incandescent counterparts)
ACTUALLY, modern LEDs, such as CREE's are just fine.
More information about LEDs
How fast can LEDs replace fluorescent light?
I expect ESLs to replace LEDs for household use, even
before LEDs make sense for household use.
CREE Lighting
LEDs almost never wear-out (typicaly last 100,000 hours).
They usually consume the less power and run cooler than other "bulbs"
(except, possibly, for ESLs.
retrofit LED bulbs out later this year that can pay their replacement costs in one year
We are using two different types of under cabinet LED light fixtures
(obtained from Lowes, but not listed on their website 1/2008). My
favorite is:
Portfolio Item #240230 (50505/05) LED Puck Accent Lighting - a 4" round LED fixture
with a push on, push off switch and 20 Bright white LEDs. We are using
these to light our Lowboy cabinet with stained glass doors, and in my
closets and other small areas. I will also put some under kitchen
cabinets and many closets. Portfolio
Another useful LED fixture is the Portfilio #50509/05 and #50510/05 LED
Strip Light Accent Light. This comes in both a 16.5 inch long (14 LEDs) and
a 24 inch long (20 LEDs) LED bar. These LED light bars cane be joined together.
I did not find the LEDs in these units to be as bright as the Puck LED light
(see above). Of course, there are fewer LEDs in these units than in the LED
Puck, but I still think that the LEDs in these are not as bright as in the
Puck light. I can find a lot of useful places to put these. We bought ours
from Lowes, but these are not on the Lowes web site.
For non-wired (battery operated) LED solution for closets and other small spaces,
I like the LUMEN Wireless LED Puck Lights. They have high, low and off settings.
These are NOT the tap-on lights, but you do tap them switch the light output
level. The have FIVE BRIGHT white LEDs and run off of Three AAA batteries.
I like the battery life. They can also be swiveled and pivoted. They are
Model LPL623CPB, item # 103517. I got these at Costco. There are lots of
other brands, which may be just a s good, but I really like these

Nitrogen in your car Tires
Newer tires are now filled with Nitrogen rather than air.
Tires filled with nitrogen are supposed to have GREEN valve stems.
Nitrogen expaneds and contracts less than ordinary air, and
allows tires to perform better and last longer.
I think they use it in airplane tires because there is no moisture and
therefore no freezing and lumps as with car tires when they get cold.
Remember, airplane tires may get to 65 below zero at 42,000 feet and
moisture freezing and thawing would really give that rubber some
extra punishment.
