SUNSCREEN - General Information - Facts
REMEMBER, I AM NOT A SCIENTIST NOR A DOCTOR.
ANY NEGATIVE OPINIONS ON INGEDIENTS come from Sites that I have listed.
The FDA has mandated a new sunscreen label starting the summer 2012
Pick a water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.
For trips near the equater (Africa), I would look for an SPF 45.
Use a Sunscreen that adaquately blocks both UVA and UVB rays.
Remember that companies are improving their products, so check the
current ingredients and the current safety rating. Many of the ratings
posted in this web page are from 8/2010, alhtouh I recheck the some of
ratings from time to time.
Generally speaking, the higher the SPF the more likely the product is
to contain ingredients thought to be dangerous by EWG and GoodGuide.
Always check out the product and/or it's ingredients for health risks.
If you are at risk for acne, I suggest a Non-Comedogenic
(Oil Free) suncreen (one that does not clog your skin's pores).
Try for a water-based, not an oil-based sunscreen, BUT remember
that water-based sunscreens may not be good if you are actually
going in the water or sweat a lot (check the label).
Use a UV-protective lip balm, WITHOUT Oxybenzone.
(Oxybenzone raises a high level of health concern because... - GoodGuide.com)
Most sunscreens tested, stained fabrics.
EWGs ratings of LIP BALMS - from safest to Worst
Broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) Sunscreens have Expiration Dates.
Do not use Sunscreens with an expired expiration date, as it will NOT be as effective.
Suggestions (opinions from supporting articles, further down on this web page)
WARNINGS (opinions from articles) - Do NOT use Sunscreens containing:
1] OXYBENZONE
2] PABA
3] Nano Titanium Dioxide
Your clothes don't really protect you from the Sun's rays.
The average cotton T-shirt only has an SPF of 4.
Wear sun-protective clothing, preferably with a UVP (ultraviolet protection rating).
I AM NOT A DOCTOR AND I HAVE NO MEDICAL TRAINING
If you need sunscreen for young children, babies or toddlers,
ensure that you read the label (or theirs or EWG's website)
to see if the product is recommended for kids of that age.
If the child is under six months old, I would check with your
pediatrician (child doctor).
There are many new Broad-Spectrum Sunscreens out there (read the Expiration Date).
Photostability = the ability to stabilize under sunlight.
Photostabilizer = Slows down the breakdown of the UV blocker.
Water Resistant = SPF level stays effective after 40 minutes in the water.
Very Water Resistant = Very water resistant means it holds after 80 minutes of swimming
Does sunscreen EXPIRE?
Some sunscreens include an expiration date.
MayoClinic says (quality) sunscreen designed to last up to three years.
Do NOT use Sunscreen that has "expired" - it will not be as effective.

Consumer Reports rates sunscreens. Did yours make the cut? - MAY 2011
WARNING - It is my PERSONAL OPINION that Consumer Reports does a great job of
testing the EFFECTIVENESS of sunscreens, but EWG examines the potential for health
damage in sunscreen ingredients - thus a sunscreen that CR rates as excellent, may (and
probably does) show up as DANGEROUS TO YOUR HEALTH by EWG.org and other such
organizations.
In MY OPINION, I would not worry too much about occassional use of sunscreens not rated
as good for your health by EWG, but I, PERSONALLY, would not use them on a continuous basis.

"We’re being encouraged to buy sunscreens that offer broad spectrum protection" - WebMD
FDA’s New Sunscreen Rules: FAQ - 6/14/2011 - webmd
"The most important of the new rules:
* The claim “broad spectrum” will appear only on sunscreens tested
for a minimum standard of UVA protection.
* All sunscreens will carry their SPF rating. On products without
the broad-spectrum claim, SPF will rate only UVB protection.
On broad-spectrum sunscreens, higher SPF numbers mean more
protection against UVB as well as more protection against UVA.
* Sunscreens that claim to be water resistant must show how long they
last after a person has been swimming or sweating: 40 minutes or
80 minutes. Sunscreens that are not water resistant will have to
say so in the “fact box” on the side or back of the package.
* As do other over-the-counter drugs, sunscreens will now have a fact
box listing warnings and other important information in an easy-to-find location.

AVOBENZONE (also called: Helioplex and Parsol 1789)
Avobenzone is a very good UVA Blocker, but breaks down quickly in sunlight.
Therefore, reputable companies that use Avobenzone also add a photostabilizer
to slow down the breakdown. A highly touted agent for this purpose is octocrylene.
For a list of other, commonly used photostabilizer, go here,

Lots of people state that sunscreens containing Avobenzone cause

Nano Zinc Oxide is considered by some authorities to be better than Nano Titanium Dioxide because:
1] Nano Zinc Oxide is NOT as white as Titanium Dixide
2] Nano Zinc Oxide does a better job of reflecting UV than does Titanium Dioxide
3] Titanium Dioxide is classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans (do NOT breath it).
(so, perhaps, if we do not breath it, it will not adversly effect us? or will it?)
and
4] I would expect it to be cheaper than the Titanium Dioxide (but I don't know that).
