MY COMMENTS (Opinions) - David Woodsmall
One of the most popular OTA HDTV Antenna companies is ANTENNNAS DIRECT.
Their most popular line of these OTA antennas is called: CLEAR STREAM (or CS).
My friends are all using one of the C2, CS4 or CS5 models.
Specifications and pricing all belong to CLEAR STREAM.
A comment on purchasing an OTA antenna
When I and my friends looked into buying OTA antennas,
we noticed that the local Raleigh Brand, Mohu, was:
1) Much More expensive for less capability than was ANTENNNAS DIRECT
2) Gave you less for more money (shorter range, primarily) than ANTENNNAS DIRECT
We were NOT interested on stick-on-the-window types of a OTA
HGTV antennas, so perhaps our research does not apply to them.
Your opinion may vary.
An antenna is an antenna - you can use coat hangers. BUT if the picture is fuzzy, and the station not-to
far way, then an antenna specifically designed for a particular frequency (channel #) will provide
a better picture. If the channel is very weak at your house, then a better antennae MAY add either
clarity and or a few more stations (there aren't that many stations around us, see my listing, below).
NOTE - THIS (ABOVE) IS AN OLD LIST - the frequencies are probably different
by now - RESCAN. This list is probably accurate in showing WHICH HDTV stations
you sould be able to get.
USE ONLY RG6 COAX (preferably quad-shielded [RG6Q]) to improve your picture AND allow longer
COAX cable runs - 15 years ago, DISH would not work if your NON-RG6 cable was over 60 feet long.
I ALWAYS USE MY MOTOROLA BROADBAND AMPLIFIERS.
I ADDED ONE IMMEDIATELY AFTER MY OTA ANTENNA.
NOTE MOST NEW DIGITAL HDTV's INCLUDE A OTA DIGITAL TUNER. CHECK ON THIS.
YOU CAN NOT GET ANY REAL MOVIE nor CABLE nor SUPERSTATIONS (CNN, TBS,TBS, TNT, A&E,
USA...) STATIONS USING OTA - You can ONLY get MAJOR NON-CABLE NETWORKS.
HOWEVER, we can now get some of the above stations with SLING TV AND ONLY SLING TV ($20/month).
I would dearly love to see USA and SYFY added to SLING TV - oh well.
NOTE that you can NOT record shows from SLING TV.

OTA Channels for the 27615 Area Code - May 26, 2015
DON, living in Raligh, NC 27612:
Dave,
I have only over the air service and I get about 45 channels with our main antenna
and 20 something with the “stick it on the window” antenna. Just like cable,
there are many channels that are either duplicates or that I never watch.
I get 7 Spanish language channels.
Here is a list of the channels that I found with a duckduckgo search.
27612 OTA Channels
I have not rescanned in some time and did not get anything above 50.2.

ClearStream 2V UHF/VHF Long Range Indoor/Outdoor DTV Antenna **
ClearStream 2V UHF/VHF Long Range Indoor/Outdoor DTV Antenna
The ClearStream 2V Long Range UHF/VHF Antenna has a unique integrated diplexer to
take on the challenge of combining UHF and VHF signals. It has a 50+ mile range and
is the ideal antenna for suburban installations challenged with receiving signals
through heavy foliage outdoors or roofing materials in attic installations.
The ClearStream 2V comes with a heavy duty u-bolt, mounting clamp, and hardware
(J-mount and coaxial cable sold separately). Easy to assemble and install.
Dimensions are 20" high by 35" wide when bars extended.
This antenna covers both UHF and VHF.
If you need an indoor antenna and you have room to contain this thing,
it really works! All the UHF stations I get crystal clear. The 2V also
has two added poles to catch VHF signals and it works as advertised.
The only caveat is the horizontal bars need some clearance behind it.
If you mount it with the VHF bars flush against the wall, it doesn't
receive well so give it about a foot of space on both sides.
This is a directional antenna, but with a wide beam (around 70 degrees).
So you can't just face it anywhere if you have broadcasting towers scattered
around. The trick is to find the station that is the furthest away/the one you
are getting the weakest signal and aim it in that direction. So long as the
other stations you want are within 70 degrees of that farthest station, you
will be able to pull most of the stations you want.
Here is another tip; even though the antenna has a front face, it can also
receive signals from the back. So whatever you are catching in the beam width
in one heading, you may also receive in the opposite direction (with the back
of the antenna). But if the towers are on either sides, you are not going to
get it. However if you turn the antenna 90 degrees you will get new stations,
but you lose most of the ones you had before.
Bottom line, it is VERY important to check online where your towers are.
Find the farthest one away in the cluster of towers you want the most and aim
it that way. I highly recommend this one for indoor use.
My network stations are 20 miles away, but I can pull in stations 40 miles away
indoors. It may be an eyesore but you will get used to it. If you follow these
instructions, you will most likely have success with ClearStream 2V."

New breakthroughs in efficiency & size
New breakthroughs in efficiency & size. The first all new HD TV antennas optimized for
the post 2009 digital frequencies. Designed for reception on high VHF (Ch 7-13) and core
UHF (Ch 14-51). Ultra efficient design now allows powerful TV antennas to be smaller than
ever thought possible.
Popular digital antennas may claim high “peak” gains on specific frequencies, but the
ClearStream models are consistently powerful across the entire DTV spectrum. With other
compact tv antennas as little as 10% of the signal may actually reach the tuner.
Advancements in efficiency mean that up to 98% of the signal actually makes it to the line
rather than being lost to impedance mismatches.
For most locations, the ClearStream Micron, ClearStream1, ClearStream2, or ClearStream4 will
receive all HDTV signals in the area.
However, some DTV stations that have reverted back to VHF frequencies may have also cut their
power by over 90%. For these low power VHF TV stations, a ClearStream5 VHF TV antenna may be
required as a supplement.
ClearStream Eclipse Amplified Antenna
The ClearStream Eclipse Amplified TV antenna with Sure Grip Technology takes the most advanced
technology, the tapered loop, and placed it in an easy-to-install package.
Sure Grip Technology allows you to affix the antenna with no adhesive or mess. Position on any flat
surface including windows, walls or behind your television. But, you will not want to hide the look
of this state-of-the-art TV antenna.
And the included amplifier system gives you a 35+ Mile Range.
Comes with 12 ft. Coaxial Cable and Preamplifier System. See specifications for what's included.

MAKE / BUILD / DIY YOUR OWN HDTV ANTENNA
"You can make your own (very good one) – check out U tube. Antenna is just a
bunch of wires cut to specific lengths soldered together with an RF combiner
for the different sections....."
Build two of them and rf combine them so you can point have one antenna pointed in
two directions. Add a 3-10db booster and your set. Pretty amazing. If you like
math, when you build yours you can increase the sensitivity for specific frequencies
by changing the length of the wire rod on your antenna.
I have never paid a cent to watch OTA TV or cable. I do anticipate paying for play
as pay as you go "smart tv" becomes mainstream. I have a Roku 3 box connected to my
second TV. My first TV is a Sony 22" CRT which is about 25 years old and is connected
to a digital "free" converter box. I sit about 15' feet away from it and as far as I
can tell its a 4k picture to me. All this talk about pixels for for folks whom watch
the TV from 5ft away. It's all about pixels for unit area. After a while your older
eyes can't tell the difference. - ED
